Perfect 10

October 11, 2010

General Information

Weather temps hitting a high of 80 made for some perfect weather for staying active.  I had a friend visiting from Philly and we were sure to take advantage by being outside as much as possible.  When we took a long walk by Lake Michigan, we saw people sunbathing. Yes. Sunbathing in October in Wisconsin.  This is unheard of.  I was happy to see so many people taking advantage of the weather and getting out to do active things.  Frisbee. Paddleboats. Running and biking.  Volleyball.  Tennis.  In-line skating.  It’s sad to think that winter is just around the corner when there is weather as beautiful as it was this weekend.  In true Wisconsin fashion, my friend and I hit up the farm.  Pumpkin picking had me squatting at least 30 times to find the most symmetrical, medium-sized, just-right orange pumpkin and walking the entire length of the patch did make me work up a sweat.  We also did a corn maze, a first for both of us, which if you get lost enough times can also be a pretty good workout.  All in all a perfect weekend to get up, get out, and be active.  What are you going to do this fall to enjoy the last few weeks before winter hits?

My name is Monique Serpas, PT, DPT, OCS. I am a physical therapist and board-certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist practicing at the Southeast Louisiana Healthcare System in New Orleans, LA. I realize how difficult it can be to overcome an injury or manage a chronic condition and am focused on helping my clients achieve wellness through a physically active lifestyle. I treat orthopaedic, balance, and vestibular disorders and practice using a combination of hands-on manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and education. This enables my patients to assist in their own recovery and injury prevention. I also have developed fall prevention and golf-related rehab programs in the past. I hold a Doctor of Physical Therapy from Concordia University Wisconsin (2008) and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Louisiana State University (2004). I am a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Louisiana Physical Therapy Association (LPTA), and the Orthopaedic and Neurology sections of the APTA.
