Ciao Italia!
As you are reading this I am en route to Italy and looking forward to living la dolce vita. The only thing I hate about traveling is the actual travel. Who designed the seating that crams everyone together like sardines? I fly coach, where leg room is precious. One thing I tell my clients to do when they are traveling is to move carry ons from in front of them to maximize leg room and to frequently bend and straighten their knees. Ask for the aisle and get up as frequently as possible. Pump the ankles up and down. Stay moving as much as possible to lessen the effects of inactivity and reduce the risk of blood clots in the legs.
When sleeping, be sure to pack a supportive pillow. I like the u-shaped ones that prevent the head from tipping side to side. I have seen patients with neck pain after a trip because they slept in an awkward position. You know the person that does the bob and weave in their sleep? Don’t let this be you and save your neck.
Travel may be necessary, but make it the least stressful on your body.
My name is Monique Serpas, PT, DPT, OCS. I am a physical therapist and board-certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist practicing at the
Southeast Louisiana Healthcare System in New Orleans, LA. I realize how difficult it can be to overcome an injury or manage a chronic condition and am focused on helping my clients achieve wellness through a physically active lifestyle. I treat orthopaedic, balance, and vestibular disorders and practice using a combination of hands-on manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and education. This enables my patients to assist in their own recovery and injury prevention. I also have developed fall prevention and golf-related rehab programs in the past. I hold a Doctor of Physical Therapy from
Concordia University Wisconsin (2008) and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from
Louisiana State University (2004). I am a member of the
American Physical Therapy Association (APTA),
Louisiana Physical Therapy Association (LPTA), and the Orthopaedic and Neurology sections of the APTA.
